IOWA CITY (Iowa)- The granddaddy of Them All came a call. Former Iowa Hayden Fry football coach is one of the three persons who will be incorporated into the class of Rose Bowl Hall of Fame 2010 December 30 in Pasadena, California.

"It's a great honour and a great tribute to all the coaches and players that were part of my program," said Fry, which closed career coach Hawkeye as the winningest coach in school history (143-89-6). "It is also a great honour to represent the Big Ten Conference".

In its 20-year run as head coach of Iowa, Fry led the Hawkeye 96 wins Big Ten and three titles of the League with each winner his squad a trip to the Rose Bowl. His first Rose Bowl appearance came season 1981, which ended a hiatus of Iowa for 23 years in the game. Its program is then invited to the Rose Bowl in 1985 and 1991.

"When I first in Iowa, fans were so popular that they gave us a standing ovation standing when we would get a first down," said Fry. "I thought keep me away, what they would do if we scored a hit?"

"Iowa had a winning season in my third year and 17 years, we have won the Big Ten and went to the Rose Bowl. We have then again in 1985 with Chuck Long and boys. »

Fry recalled its squadrons challenges encountered during the preparation for the first two appearances of Rose Bowl game in 1981 and 1985.

"We didn't have an indoor facility of practice my first years, therefore to the first Rose Bowl we worked outside the snow and ice." The second part, we went to 20 days at the beginning to get out of the snow - I think that my players gained 11 pounds each. »

Third Rose Bowl appearance of the Fry in 1990 could be more rewarding. The Hawkeye obtained berth after displaying a global record of 8-4 and a 6-2 mark in the Big Ten.

"I was really surprised with 1990, that we selected to finish seventh or eighth in the pre-season team," said Fry. "We then to win the Big Ten."

Fry will be inducted at the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in the same year that one of his former players, Bret Bielema lead Wisconsin in The granddaddy of Them all Questionné on meaning, Fry was quick to highlight a number of former coaches and players who will be coach teams in Bowl games in 2010 - 2011.
